Seven By Seven Meme

I was tagged by The Weekend Fisher for the "Seven by Seven" meme.

I'll be honest.  I have never done one of the these tagged thingies.  I thought they were ... well, goofy. You know what?  They are goofy. But occasional goofy is okay. :-)  It promotes community.  It reveals a little of your humanity.  It helps you not take yourself too seriously, if you know what I mean.

True Truth or False Truth?

Taken from an essay on the Bible written by a Christian pastor.

"There are hard and fast truths in it[i.e. the Bible], yes, but they are surrounded by soft truths, and slippery truths, and sometimes truths, and truths that once were true but are no longer true, and truths that are only true if you are in the right state of mind, and truths that are only true if you are not hurting someone, and truths that are true in the moment but not if you are talking about the moment, and truths that can only be lived and should never be spoken, and truths that we cannot hear, and truths that are more than we can bear.

The truths of the bible are utterly beyond anyone who seeks to own truth and who seeks truth above the Spirit of God."

Ummm ... are these claims about truth true?  Or are they sometimes true?  Perhaps they are just slippery truth claims which were once true but no longer are true.

I liked his essay until I came across this mish mash of self-refuting truth claims about truth.  We can rebuke those who use the Bible as a weapon (which was his main point) without embracing relativism.  This is scary folks.

Robert McDonnell Certified As AG

The next chapter of the Robert McDonnell for AG in Virginia is complete.  The State Board has declared McDonnell the new Attorney General for Virginia.  He won by 323 votes out of 1.94 million cast.  The final tally : Republican McDonnell 970,886 votes, Democrat Deeds 970,563 votes.  Interestingly, there were 1,801 write-in votes cast.  Those write-in votes were greater than the margin of victory.

The Virginia Governor, Mark Warner, has allowed both campaigns to have a transitional office in Richmond.  Our tax dollars are being spent on those offices.  The loser better reimburse the state for the wasted money. 

By law, Virginia will pay for this recount since the margin of victory is less than one-half of one percent.  Both Deeds and McDonnell are raising money for legal teams to oversee the recount.  The recount is expected to be completed by Christmas.

The main difference between these candidates is their stance on abortion.  McDonnell is pro-life and Deeds is pro-abortion.

Deeds continues to show no class in his latest broadside at McDonnell.

"Anybody who proclaims great confidence in these results and claims to know what's going to happen is just being foolish," Deeds said in an interview. Without specifically referring to McDonnell, he said people who declare the race over are "either lying or they are crooked or they're just puffing."

Is that kind of attitude really necessary?

I will post the results of the recount.  Let's just hope that this does not happen.

More Pigfests!

Reflections On A Life Changing Funeral

A light rain fell yesterday at Westminster Gardens where the body of sixteen year old Clete Childs was interred.

While standing there in the misty rain, I turned to my friends David and Christine, and said "Clete's life was redemptive.  Everywhere he went, he pushed back the darkness."  They nodded in agreement.  Clete, through his minstry of hugs, engaged everyone around him and reclaimed enemy occupied territory by giving away joy.

Clete's funeral is the most distinctive funeral I have ever attended and perhaps will ever attend.

Clete

CleteA friend of mine was hit by a drunk driver last night.  His brain shows no activity at the moment.  His heart is strong and continues to beat.  He is sixteen years old.  Pray that God in his mercy would choose to perform a miracle on my friend Clete. Update: Clete passed away at Baptist hospital in Winston, on November 19th.

Clete Childs  1989 - 2005

Update: Others have special posts expressing grief at Clete's passing.  Joe Guarino and Mickey McLean are both members of the Greensboro blogging community and both have ties to Caldwell Academy (Clete's school).  Clete's picture was on the front page of Saturday's News and Record.  Many in this community are feeling the effect of this tragedy.  My prayer is that God will use Clete's death in a redeeming way, in the same way that Clete's life on this earth had a redemptive impact on those around him.

The family will be receiving visitors at Friendly Hills Church at 10 am on Monday.  Clete's funeral service will be at 1:00 pm.

Eugenics, The Self-Direction Of Human Evolution

Eugenics_congress_logoEugenics played a signficant role in the Nazi biomedical vision that I have been reading about in The Nazi Doctors.   Just what is eugenics anyway?

Though eugenics sounds similar to genetics,  it is not a scientific concept.  It belongs in the realm of social science.  The term Eugenics was coined in 1883 by Sir Francis Galton, a cousin of Charles Darwin.  It means "good genes" as in "good breeding" or "good births".
