"I was asked recently by a person with whom I enjoy a mentoring relationship why I spent time with another person in such a relationship. In other words; “What did I see in that other person? Why would I invest in that relationship?”
Sam Metcalf, President of Church Resource Ministry
We all need mentors in our lives if we intend to grow as a follower of Christ. That is just the way it is. Going it alone simply doesn't work. Neither does winging it. We are relational creatures and God has wired us to need each other.
But there is not exactly a plethora of master mentors out there to invest in rising 30-somethings and 40-somethings who are just beginning to take leadership positions in ministry.
There are master mentors out there. They are intentional about selecting others to mentor. That is part of what makes them a master mentor. What do they look for?
One master mentor shares his list.
- Spiritually Alive
- Teachable
- Passionate
- Character
- Apostolic Gifting
- Servant
- Thoughtful
- Culturally Savvy
- Leadership Gifting
- Sense of Calling
- Chemistry
- The Hand of God
This quite helpful to know ... both for the one who needs an upward mentor in his or her life today ... or as one who hopes to be a master mentor one day.
