I just want to take time out to thank Dan Brown.
First, thank you for stirring up an insatiable interest in church history in our culture ... especially among young people. I have at least one kid begging me to teach a small group this summer because of your story. I am taking up his challenge and hope to being this month.
Second, thank you for making me break out my history books to double check your research into the early church fathers and councils. Ignore my whining about having to do research ... that is just my laziness talking ... I know it is good for me.
Third, thank you for giving me an easy way to talk about history, Jesus Christ, and the historical veracity of the resurrection with my friends. In fact, I had a one hour conversation today with a close friend of mine who flat out told me that he did not believe Jesus Christ was the son of God. He asked me why Christians were so upset about The Da Vinci Code. What a great question! Because of your book, I was able to delve into deep waters with my friend.
My friend was surprised to find out that I actually believe Christianity stands or falls on events in history rather than on the sheer force of personal belief. Like so many in this culture, he misunderstands what it means to have faith. He thinks that simply believing something is what really counts. I now have the opportunity to refute that.
Thanks Dan Brown. Your historical research stinks, but your book continues to give me one great opportunity after another to bear witness to the truth. For that, I thank you.
It always amuses me when people get so worked up over a work of fiction...
